Lake ownership by size north of Hwy 29

The vast majority of Wisconsin's lakes are located north of Hwy. 29 and are under 50 acres in size. The large lakes were the first to be developed and average one home per 300 feet of shoreline. Only 3% of Wisconsin's lakes over 200 acres remain undeveloped today.

This chart shows that the vast majority of lakes (regardless of size) are privately owned, while relatively few are publicly owned. Only in recent years has the State of Wisconsin concentrated its efforts on buying up lakefront land. As you can see, since the larger lakes were already developed, the State is acquiring the smaller lakes. Soon, even the small lakes will be unavailable for you to own.
